Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)

Overview

TMJ disorders can be caused by several factors including abnormal muscular function in the joint area, injury to the jaw or head and neck area, whiplash, arthritis in the joint, clenching or grinding of the teeth, or stress held in the jaw.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders may include:
-Pain or tenderness of your jaw
-Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints
-Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing
-aching pain in and around your ear
-joint locking, making it difficult to open or close your jaw
-aching facial pain
-headaches
-tinnitis
-eye pain
-malocclusion of teeth

Treatment

In most cases, the pain and discomfort associated with TMJ disorders is temporary and can be relieved with self-managed care. If this is unsuccessful, non-surgical treatment is recommended.  Dr. Gurney has advanced certification in treating non-spinal joints like the TMJ. In addition to restoring the proper position of the TMJ joint with gentle jaw adjustments, Dr. Gurney restores the proper muscle movements with a technique called Myofascial Release.  Combined with FDA cleared cold laser treatments, proper position and function of the TMJ can be achieved and healing can be achieved without invasive appliances, drug, or surgery.

Finding the Right Doctor

When evaluating a chiropractor, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine suggests asking about the professional’s licensing and training, and whether that training included the specific problem you’re experiencing. Dr. Paul Gurney is the only chiropractor in Provo and Orem that is certified in the treatment of the TMJ and has over 20 years experience in the treatment of the TMJ.  Why trust anyone else?
